In addition to the excellent Avidemux, there are many other software package options available as well for video editing and processing. Interestingly enough, I found that newer AppImage applications made for Linux Mint 18.x based on Ubuntu 16.04 will usually work on Linux Mint 17.x based on Ubuntu 14.04. You might also have check the file to make sure you have permission to run it, right click file click Properties, click Permissions Tab, check excutable, click apply, ok. Update and Upgrade fresh install of Ubuntu 20.04 or newer. Avidemux is available as an "AppImage" file, why not use that? AppImage's require "fuse" to be installed, so check to make sure "fuse" is installed from the "Synaptic Package Manager (SPM)", if it is not, install it.
